What to put on a certificate of completion

A certificate of completion, or course completion certificate, says that one person finished one course or program, who says so, and when. These six parts are on every template above.

  1. The title“Certificate of Completion”, so nobody mistakes it for an award or a diploma.
  2. The full nameSpelled the way it appears on the person’s records. Check it twice; it is the one thing people notice.
  3. What they completedThe exact name of the course, training or program, as it appears in your catalog or invitation.
  4. Who issues itYour organization, school or trainer. This is what makes the certificate mean something.
  5. The dateThe day they finished. For longer programs, write the start and end date in your own wording.
  6. SignaturesAn instructor, director or manager, with their name and title printed under the line.

Add when it matters

  • Hours or credits (CE, CPD, CEU) when the course counts toward a license or membership
  • A certificate number, so an employer or auditor can check it with you
  • The place, for in-person training

Certificate of completion questions

Is this certificate of completion template free?

Yes. Fill in and download as many single certificates as you like on this page, without signing up and without a watermark. Making certificates for a whole list in MailMergic is free to try; a paid plan removes the watermark there. See pricing.

What is the difference between a certificate of completion, achievement and participation?

A certificate of completion says the person finished all of a course or program. A certificate of achievement rewards a result, such as passing with distinction or winning. A certificate of participation only says they took part. All templates here can say any of them: change “Certificate of” above the name field.

Can I add hours, credits or a certificate number?

Yes. Open “Write your own wording” and type the sentence you need, for example “For completing Ethics in Practice (3.0 continuing education hours) on September 18, 2026. Certificate no. 2026-0418.” Check with your licensing body which details they require.

Can I edit the template in Word or Google Docs?

These templates are filled in on this page and download as a PDF, which prints the same everywhere. To add your logo or change the text layout, open the template in MailMergic’s editor.

How do I print a certificate of completion?

Print the PDF in landscape at Actual size (100%), not Fit to page, on the paper size you picked. Card stock (65 to 110 lb, 175 to 300 g/m²) makes it feel like a real certificate.

Can I make certificates for a whole class or team at once?

Yes. Put the names in an Excel or Google Sheet, open the same design in MailMergic, and you get one PDF certificate per row, ready to print or email. The certificate maker page shows how it works.
