The honest price math

If Word plus a $2.50-per-month add-in reliably covers your monthly letters, that is the cheapest capable setup and we will not pretend otherwise. Word mail merge alternative: common questions

Can Word mail merge save one PDF per recipient?

Not natively. The Finish and Merge menu offers exactly three outputs: edit individual documents, print, or send email messages. Splitting into per-recipient PDF files requires the free community Merge Tools add-in, the MAPILab Toolkit, or VBA scripting.

Can Word merge emails carry a personalized PDF attachment?

No. Microsoft’s documentation states attachments cannot be added to HTML or plain-text merge emails, only links. The separate attachment format sends the merged letter itself as the attachment with no body text. A personalized PDF plus a written message requires add-ins or a different tool.

Does Word mail merge work with the new Outlook or in the browser?

Merge-to-email requires a MAPI-compatible client, in practice classic Outlook; per Microsoft support answers, the new Outlook for Windows does not support it. Word for the web preserves merge settings but cannot run a mail merge at all.

When is staying with Word the right call?
